COUNCIL REZONING DECISION RESULTS IN RV PARK APPLICATION
FOR RED POINT
SQUAMISH - Kingswood Crescent Developments Ltd., owner of the Red Point site on the Upper Mamquam Blind Channel in Squamish, has applied to the District to develop a Recreational Vehicle Park on its property.
“We were obviously very disappointed that our rezoning request for Red Point was refused on July 15,” explained Kingswood president Lorne Segal. "We had been looking forward to building a high quality, multi-family residential development at the gateway to Squamish."
"Red Point would have broadened the range of housing available to residents, reinvigorated the downtown and provided a broad range of public amenities and new revenues for Squamish," added Segal. "Our plans were consistent with Squamish's Official Community Plan which identified the site for residential use. We had staff’s recommendation for approval. And we had responded to Council's original concerns about traffic with a comprehensive plan approved by District staff, the Ministry of Transportation and several traffic experts."
Red Point also had the support of the Squamish Nation. And in a poll conducted in early July Kingswood found that 60% of Squamish residents with an opinion about Red Point supported the development.
“Despite this support and all our efforts Council voted 4 to 3 against the rezoning. So we are proceeding with an RV Park, which is a permitted use under the current zoning and the only option which makes economic sense.”
“We have been involved in this process for close to 4 years. Some members of Council may want to undertake additional planning in the neighbourhood but we have no idea how they will define that process and we are concerned it may take months, if not years, to complete. We simply cannot wait that long so we are proceeding with this outright use now.”
Kingswood anticipates the site will accommodate 70 RVs together with various support facilities. It expects construction to begin as soon as possible.
